Open Letter to the Teaching and Learning Committee

To the Members of the Teaching and Learning Committee:

 

I am calling on you to reject the proposed changes to Board Policy 9130.01: Complaints Concerning Educational Materials/Library Materials. The changes involve removing the need for a public hearing on the materials that are complained about, meaning it would be more likely that district parents may never learn of a material’s challenging and restriction.

 

This goes against the prevailing calls for transparency and parental rights, and further enables ideological attacks on books and materials a vocal minority of parents aren’t comfortable with. Please respect our intellectual freedoms and allow our students freer access to challenging ideas. Please maintain the current consideration process.
